About Turiroa |
|
Turiroa is situated on State Highway No 2, 5.6 km west of the township of Wairoa . The handy situation of the property enables a wide range of farming services and amenities within a relatively close distance. We experience an annual average rainfall of some 1200mm (N.Z. Meteorological Service Records) The rainfall is normally fairly well distributed throughout the year with the main rainfall between May – August inclusive. We range in altitude from some 20 – 211m above sea level. Turiroa is 612ha of flat, medium to steep hill country. We run a heavy stocking rate of 11 – 11.5 stock units per hectare with approximately 55% cattle and 45% sheep. We feel this is a good mix to maximise pasture use and getting the best from stock. Turiroa farm contains five soil types from the highly fertile Awamate Soil to heavy clay type that, unless well drained can be very wet in winter months. The main weed problem is with blackberry and variegated thistle but with a regular weed control program the property is generally clean of most weeds. In addition to this, a small percentage of the flat area is cropped, with the area of the cropping dependent upon the season and the prices. Turiroa Angus was established in 1944 by Walter Powdrell, the present owner's father, using stock purchased mainly from well-known Hawkes Bay Studs. The knowledge and expertise of R.E. Jefferson of Punganui Stud, Walters's father-in-law, was invaluable at this time. Earlier success included exporting cattle to Scotland , China and Australia and under Walter's sound management Turiroa Angus built up a reputation of producing quality animals. Notable sires at this time being Eros of Brackenfield, Baxter 124 of Whangara, Falcon of Waiterenui, Peron 49 th of Waiwhero, Gamble of Turiroa and Zulu 3 rd of Kaharau. Rick and Olivia, with son Andrew, operate the stud and over the years the annual bull sale has progressed from the Wairoa Sale-yards to an on property sale, the first being in 1987. These earlier events were a fairly “open air” occasion, with the Turiroa school children in attendance (the school, since closed, situated on the property) and the Powdrell family hosting a real community occasion. In time, the bull complex was covered, seating in place and a more comfortable venue developed. The bull complex is also used in early December for an annual charity dog trial, attracting competition from near and far, with strong participation from young shepherds which is particularly pleasing. Rick and Olivia's younger son, Hutton in particular, is a keen trialist. In recent times proceeds from the dog trials have been donated to the isolated Putere School , for things like new sports equipment. In more recent years the Stud has enjoyed success with one annual sale in particular – a memorable occasion when the top price bull, Turiroa Ace, sold for $60,000. The sale was believed to be an Australasian, on farm, sale record, with several other bulls going to stud. A highlight of 2008 was a son of Turiroa Burke 22 selling for one of the top prices at Australian sales. |
